When Your Dog Won’t Walk in the Rain
Some dogs love splashing through puddles and playing in the rain, while others would rather stay warm and dry. Both reactions are completely normal. Wet weather can feel noisy, cold, or slippery, and some dogs - especially older or more nervous ones - may simply choose to skip a walk.
When a dog refuses to go outside, it doesn’t mean they’re being stubborn. There are plenty of ways to keep them happy, calm, and fulfilled, even on rainy days.
Short Walks Still Count
When possible, a short, calm walk can still be beneficial. Sniffing and exploring matter far more than distance, and forcing a dog out in heavy rain can increase stress. If your dog truly won’t go out, skipping one walk is ok.

Indoor Mental Stimulation
Indoor activities can be just as effective as outdoor exercise for tiring your dog and supporting calm behaviour. Some simple ideas include:
Lick mats – calming and engaging; try with peanut butter or wet food. (Quick peanut butter safety rule: If it contains xylitol, chocolate, or artificial sweeteners - do NOT give it to your dog)
Snuffle mats or scatter feeding – encourage sniffing and problem-solving.
Puzzle toys – slow down high-energy dogs and keep them entertained.
Short training games – practicing simple cues or a new trick can be mentally tiring.
Even 10–15 minutes of mental enrichment can make a big difference.
Finding the Right Routine
For many dogs, the best rainy-day routine is a short sniff-focused walk (if they’re willing) followed by indoor enrichment. Every dog is different, and adjusting routines to suit them is part of responsible dog ownership.
Rainy days don’t have to mean bored or unsettled dogs. If you’d like some extra tips or help keeping your dog happy and fulfilled - whether it’s a short wet-weather walk or indoor enrichment ideas - feel free to get in touch.
